This page outlines and details the story and lore of Attune, and shows how these elements tie into Attune's world and gameplay.
Background
Attune is set sometime after the end of a great Dwarven kingdom. The player, a descendant of the ancient Dwarves, sets out to his historical homeland to search for and reclaim the greatest treasure of his people.
Story Progression
The ancient Dwarven kingdom of Attune is located on a remote island in the far reaches of the world. The island is a wild and treacherous place, and the player will have to navigate diverse landscapes in search of the great Dwarven treasure. Though the ancient kingdom has been long abandoned, there are still a few individuals left on the island that may aid the player in his search.
Early Game
After arriving on the island, the player comes across a merchant caravan stranded after being attacked by the local goblins who control the region. The Merchant explains his situation to the player and also mentions that the Goblin Chief had stolen cargo from his caravan, along with a Strange Crystal he had found during his journey on the island. Intrigued by this crystal and its prospect as a potential lead to the lost dwarven treasure, the player accepts a quest to help the Merchant retrieve his lost wares in exchange for keeping the strange crystal. The Merchant agrees, and the player sets out to find and confront the Goblin Chief.
Goblin Chief
The player soon discovers the source of all the goblins in the region: the Lowlands, a harsh environment, devoid of life and full of danger. After encountering local goblin scouts, the player challenges the Goblin Chief to a duel. Once defeated, the player retrieves the Merchant's wares along with the Strange Crystal. Once returned, the Merchant tells the player a rumor about the Hermit who lives deep in the Lowlands and is said to have knowledge of things such as ancient crystals and Dwarven kingdoms.
Lowlands Inscription
After returning to the Lowlands to search for the rumored Hermit, the player finds them camping near a strange, ruined structure.
Hermit
The Hermit eventually agrees to provide information about the ancient Dwarves once the player shows them the strange crystal. He speaks of a passage into a cavern not too far away that was built by the Dwarves. Previously, the Hermit had been unsuccessful with opening the door, but believes it is now possible with the player's crystal. Consequently, the Hermit reveals the nearby ruined structure to be an Attuner, an enigmatic machine of the ancient Dwarves that is supposedly used to alter the properties of special crystals. The Hermit explains that the use of the Attuner will be required to open the passageway.
Attuner
Upon further inspection, the player realizes they must collect the materials necessary to repair the contraption. Once it is repaired, the Hermit instructs the player on its use, and the player uses the Goblin Chief's Headdress, along with some other ingredients, to transform the strange crystal.
Lowlands Passage
Taking the newly transformed crystal to the Lowlands Passage, the player slots it into the mechanism of the door, opening up way into the cave system below the surface.
